Every year, science adds names to the living world. The tally is never small. Hundreds of species are formally described, often after years of slow, meticulous work, and often long after the organisms themselves were first seen.
Biologists estimate that perhaps only a tenth to a fifth of Earth’s species have been documented. Even among mammals, familiarity is incomplete. The unknown is concentrated in the small, the nocturnal, the remote, and the easily overlooked. It is also concentrated in places under pressure. Many species edge toward extinction before they ever receive a Latin binomial.
New species do not always emerge from dramatic expeditions. Some are found that way, in cloud forests or deep water, but many surface through re-examination: a genetic divergence in a museum drawer, a specimen that refuses to fit the long-standing definition. The process is slow by design. Peer review, replication, and caution stretch years into decades. By the time the public hears of a “new” species, it may already be rare.
There is another delay that science has been slower to acknowledge. Species newly described to Western science are often long known to Indigenous peoples and local communities, named, used, and situated within rich systems of ecological understanding. These communities are frequently the primary custodians of biodiversity, even if the formal credit arrives elsewhere.
The species described in 2025, as compiled by Liz Kimbrough, illustrate both sides of this ledger: the persistence of discovery and the narrowing margin for error. They were found in picnic sites and museum shelves, ancient forests and seasonal swamps, high mountains and shallow seas. Many are already vulnerable. Together, they underscore that not knowing what lives around us does not spare those species from harm.
Selected species described in 2025
- Marmosa chachapoya (Peru): A mouse opossum from high Andean cloud forests, identified through DNA after decades of mammal surveys missed it.
- Nothobranchius sylvaticus (Kenya): A forest-dwelling killifish confined to seasonal swamps in a 7-million-year-old forest now ringed by farms.
- Tessmannia princeps (Tanzania): Towering trees in the Udzungwa Mountains, possibly millennia old, known from only about 100 individuals.
- Iolaus francisi (Angola): A brilliant blue butterfly restricted to a few hundred hectares of threatened evergreen forest.
- Thismia selangorensis (Malaysia): A subterranean “fairy lantern” plant discovered beside a picnic trail, with fewer than 20 known plants.
- Ocean Census discoveries: More than 850 new marine species, including a critically endangered guitar shark, described amid accelerating ocean change.
- Myotis himalaicus (Himalayas): A long-tailed bat distinguished only after years of genetic and acoustic work in a remote mountain corridor.
- Celestus jamesbondi (Jamaica): A forest lizard named for its literary neighbor, one of dozens of newly recognized Caribbean reptiles already at risk.
- Leptophis mystacinus (Brazil): A green “parrot snake” pulled from a museum drawer, endemic to the rapidly vanishing Cerrado.
- Three Pristimantis frogs (Peru): Small Andean frogs found during night surveys in landscapes shaped by fire and grazing.
- Mobula yarae (Atlantic Ocean): A newly confirmed manta ray species, long suspected, living close to shore and close to human impact.
