Announcements The Business of Mongabay

The end of an era

Driven by a desire to share my book on tropical rainforests with the public for free, I established Mongabay in 1999. 25 years on, Mongabay has evolved from a website hosting my book to a comprehensive platform covering a wide range of environmental topics far beyond tropical forests. Mongabay has since evolved from a website hosting my book to a comprehensive platform covering a wide range of environmental topics far beyond tropical forests.

The initial aim of the rainforest book was to spark interest and encourage action towards preserving these vital ecosystems. It was a project born from my personal passion and viewpoint, a stance that is not fully aligned with Mongabay’s current journalistic approach.

As Mongabay has grown, incorporating the efforts of hundreds of journalists reporting from Nature’s frontline, our scope has vastly exceeded the rainforest focus. This expansion reflects a multifaceted mission, making the rainforest section increasingly less aligned with the organization’s broader objectives. Additionally, my responsibilities in overseeing a multinational organization have limited my ability to update the rainforest content as frequently as it deserves.

Therefore I have decided to archive the rainforest section at rainforests.mongabay.com and relocate it to a dedicated site, worldrainforests.com, effective immediately. This move will ensure the rainforest content remains accessible as a public resource, separate from Mongabay’s journalism, capacity-building, and education intiatives.

This approach mirrors actions taken last year when I moved my personal photo collection from travel.mongabay.com to butlernature.com, and the year before with my writings on tropical freshwater fish.

Thank you for your interest and for following Mongabay’s journey!
